The Neighbors are Saddened and Shocked. report by Ed Vincent Some one murdered Pedro H. Gurrola Jr. this morning as he was leaving for work. The murder happened in his garage at about 6:45 a.m., it was said to have been a blunt force trauma to the head, but with no apparent weapon yet found. One of his neighbors was next door in his own yard at about the time of the killing. He was in the yard with his German shepherd dogs and neither he or the dogs heard anything unusual, anything to draw their attention. Lashon M. Gurrola found her husband's body in a pool of blood in the garage at about 10:00 a.m. and immediately called 911. The murder happened on the same block as Ascension Elementary School (815 South East Avenue, Oak Park, Il). Pedro H. Gurrola Jr. lived by the alley at 835 South East Avenue and was a mailman for the United States Postal service, he worked in the western suburbs. Their daughter had baby sat for some of the neighbors and the family was friends with all the neighbors we spoke to. Mr. Gurrola was a strong and healthy man, but no mention was made of any defense wounds. His car was also said to have been stolen (a photo of a similar car and color is shown below at the end of the report). A silver Nissan pathfinder was found in the garage. It is only a small two car garage and perhaps some business was taking place during the time of the crime. Lashon M. Gurrola, the wife of the deceased, is a nurse and runs a business with some 20 employees that work for her. Neighbors said that they had known the family for almost a decade and they were wonderful people, never a problem. Many neighbors had no comments for reporters, but all were in shock over the news. Many were wondering how safe the neighborhood was. Police patroling the perimeter said nothing to the citizens, and many knew little of events within the border of police tape. ![]() A Young girl from Ascension Elementary School listens as the murder is broadcast over the airwaves. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo Ascension Elementary School at the end of the block. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo ![]() Police were on the scene all day and evidence was being sought from every nook and cranny. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos The Oak Park Fire Department arrives with ladders and men to assist the Police with their search of the nearby roofs for evidence. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo ![]() Late in the afternoon Police keep looking for more leads into this Oak Park homicide. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos Neighborhood children have heard the news from the radio and friends, and look in disbelief. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photo The Police were very busy today, all day, and more to come. © Suburban Journals of Chicago Inc. photos Some neighbors told us that the oldest daughter from the family was serving in Iraq, and the younger daughter in 6th grade at Percy Julian was a good baby sitter. Other neighbors noted that there were often many people coming and going from the house, which could have been related to the wife's business. 41-year-old Pedro H. Gurrola Jr., is scheduled for an autopsy on this Friday, September 10 by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. The Police department have called this a targeted murder, not a random act from a stranger. That still has the neighbors very upset and rightly so. Two of the leads being investigated might have to do with some talk concerning gambling debts, but dead men don't pay the bills very well and another avenue might be of an amorous angle.
