Woman robbed in alley; incident similar to four others

April 29, 2011 – A  fifth incident involving nighttime robberies of lone female residents has Oak Park police asking residents to be on the look out for suspicious individuals and vehicles – especially in alleys – and not to hesitate to call 9-1-1 if something seems out of the ordinary.

The latest incident occurred at about 8 p.m., Thurs., April 28, in the 300 block of North Oak Park Avenue. The victim, in her mid-20s, had parked her car on Superior Street and was robbed as she walked down the alley approaching the rear door of a church.

As in four similar incidents, the offender approached from behind and grabbed the victim around the neck. He took a wallet from her purse and fled. No injuries were reported.

This latest incident was not far from the Lake Street corridor where four similar nighttime robberies of lone women occurred. These incidents occurred on March 30 in the 200 block of Lake Street, April 2 near Lake Street and Austin Boulevard, April 4 in the 200 block of North Oak Park Avenue and April 19, in the 200 block of South Harvey Avenue. These four incidents occurred between 11:40 p.m. and 12:45 a.m., no serious injuries were reported and no weapon was seen or implied.

In each incident, the suspect is described as an African-American male in his 20s, about five feet 10 inches to six feet tall with a medium build. In the first three incidents, he was believed to have been wearing a light colored jacket with a black knit hat. In the latest two incidents, the offender was described similarly, but with short hair and wearing a dark, possibly hooded sweatshirt and dark pants.

Police were on the scene in less than two minutes of when the incident was reported, suggesting that the robber had a vehicle parked nearby. In the previous incident, neighbors reported seeing a man enter a light-colored, newer-model Ford SUV and driving westbound on Pleasant Street.

While Police cannot say for sure that the assailant is the same in all five incidents, the similarities suggest he could be.

Police will continue to have increased patrols in the area as the investigation continues and until the offender is apprehended. Anyone with information regarding these incidents is urged to contact the Oak Park Police Department at 708.386.3800 or e-mail police@oak-park.us.

In the meantime, Police are urging residents, especially females, to avoid being out alone after dark. Residents also can call 708.386.3800 from dusk to dawn and request a Police escort.

Chicago Guardian Angels Help Protect
Oak Park residents.
by Ed Vincent

Last night, returning from the city at about 11:00 p.m., I found three Guardian Angels from Chicago,
guarding the elevated train stop on the green line at Oak Park Avenue.  They were passing out literature to residents coming home from the city and offering escorts to people's cars or homes.

The volunteers were working four hour shifts in Oak Park, and have been for a number of days, since the robberies in Oak Park have been happening to single women.  The Guardian Angels all have jobs or are students and each volunteer two shifts a week of four hours each.  Their presence in itself helps to deter criminals and other times they offer defense to victims of crimes.

The most important thing is for citizens to become more aware or realistic about threats from the street and especially at night and while alone.  The Oak Park police will also offer escorts to your car for safety, by calling 708-386-3800.

2 More Females Have Been Robbed in
Oak Park in the of Late Night, This
Brings the Total Now to 5 Female Victims.

Two more women have been robbed in Oak Park, both being strong armed robbery's with no weapon reported seen or mentioned, and close to their residence.

The second attack of the evening happened at about 10:50 p.m. in the 900 block of South Lyman Avenue, the other attack was about an hour earlier, also on the east side of Oak Park.

The last two female victims were each close to their homes at the time of the attack, which happened with an approach from behind.  The perpetrator in both of these cases was reported to be similar to the  drawing below showing a young lighter skinned black male.   Perhaps in both cases the women were more relaxed, more at ease,  because of the proximity to their homes,  but given the location and the time of the evening,  close to midnight,
extra caution perhaps could have been observed.

There was an elderly woman in our neighborhood late last night, when my wife and I were out with our dogs.  We're only a couple blocks away from the green line near Oak Park avenue and this older female was out with her 10 pound dog strolling around.  She and her small terrier greeted us at about 11 o'clock in the evening totally alone and she was probably close to 70 years old.   I warned her about being careful and she went back to the safety of her car which she had driven to the area to walk the dog.

Given these times and the amount of criminal activity in the region caution should never be a stranger. Unfortunately many people travel about with music in their ears, alone and late at night.  A neighbor years ago could not believe that someone would come into her yard to steal their bikes, which were unlocked at near the home.  She even seemed to be more alarmed at having her yard trespassed instead of the bike being stolen.  Many residents don't even call the police when something is stolen.

Apathy is a costly hobby, whether it is your failing to take caution with your safety or failing to vote in an election that determines 90% of property tax bill.  Please be careful.......

Crimes in Oak Park, River Forest and Forest Park continues without any surveillance cameras
on either the Blue or Green train lines. L
ocal police have long held that these trains continue
to be responsible for many criminals coming into the towns.  When will something be done?
