Mike McCasky, Opening Night for the New
Soldier's Field
Oak Park Journal photo
When we asked Mike McCasky if he thought that Papa Halas
would approve of the new fancy locker room for the visiting team, he smiled
and told us that ; "He would not be happy with comfort they now have."
We asked Mr. McCasky how he liked the new stadium and he said he loved
it.
Mayor Richard M. Daley

Mayor Richard Daley said that he
loved the new Soldier's Field.
When we asked about the visitors
locker room he said that he
had not seen them, and just
smiled when we gave him the quote
from McCasky
Steven Douglas (Mongo) McMichael
Oak Park Journal photo
Steve (Mongo) McMichael was all
smiles and signed everything
that the fans through his direction.
A fan favorite and gentleman unless you're trying to quote
his view on the condition of the visitors locker room. McMichael
said there should be fewer shower heads, colder water, and "
#@%! the visitors". When we asked
McMichael about the architecture of the new stadium he said, "the inside
is nice, but the outside looks like a space ship that flew through
@#&%!!".
Mongo is a lot of fun and is
an act in class by itself.
Mongo, ever the fans friend signs everything the
fans throw his way. A great talent and a fine man.
Many sports and entertainment folks could learn
a lot about this kind of fan loyalty.

Richard Dent (Asst. Defensive Line Coach) was all
smiles, but some of that could have been because
Steve McMichael was near him.

When we spoke with Gayle Sayres
later in the evening he said that he liked the inside and the outside of
the new stadium. When asked if he agreed with Mongo's view he said;
"nobody plays on the outside, who cares??"

Veteran Bear's Attend the Opening Night
Festivities and are Cheered for Many Years
of Great Games.
Oak Park Journal photo
The opening Monday night football game began with some
wonderful singing, fireworks, and the thrill of almost
a hundred
former Bear's players marching out onto the field
and being
cheered all the way by the entire stadium of well
wishers. The
Bears came out on the field next with all the fanfare
celebrating
the new inaugural season of the completed Soldier's
Field. The
weather was beautiful and the field was so inviting
that a small
local bird chose to spend most of the game on the
well lit field
hunting for food-he didn't even mind the 100
decibel cheer of the fans.
Brian Urlacher entered the field to the loud cheers
of many of his fans and the many who were also wearing his jersey
#54.
Mr. Urlacher was all over the field when someone needed
stopping. When we reviewed our photos from the night's game, Brian
Urlacher was in most that had a pile of men reaching for the ball.
The crowd cheered for each first down made, instead of the hoped for touchdowns.
There is always this coming Sunday and the hope for
a new game. The evening was a good event nonetheless. I should also
add a note on how well we noticed the working of traffic, as good or maybe
better than the Indy 500. The color coded parking, each having different
routes for coming and going seems to be a very, very good idea and seems
to have worked just as well.
Gary Fencik and his family arrive at the new stadium
to be honored on the field, a field where he and the rest of the 1985 Bears
team made history.
